While Ally was on vacation for a week, we watched her dog Kehau for her. We were super excited because we just love dogs! We came to truly bond and have a great connection with this sweet dog, and thoroughly enjoyed having her with us. I grew up with two dogs that were my best friends as a child, and having Kehau in our home brought back such deep and real memories of companionship and happiness.
She was always with us and only in her kennel if we left the house. But otherwise she slept near us, followed us everywhere and spent countless hours outside running and playing with the kids. She was also my buddy during the late hours of the night and early morning when I couldn't sleep and kept me company and offered comfort. Even Erwin (who always claims he doesn't like dogs) truly came to enjoy her and looked forward to going on walks with her and liked that she followed him everywhere.
Sadly, Wa'a's allergies got worse day after day while watching her. We've always known that he is allergic to dog saliva. (He swells up and breaks out in hives.) But it has been quite a while since we've seen anything major, and thought we could handle Kehau with us and have it under control. But sadly, saliva from the dog was everywhere, and Wa'a would constantly touch his eyes and then spend the rest of the day crying, swollen and in pain. He also started wheezing often and throwing up. Each day was worse than the previous, and he was absolutely miserable. And I was too seeing him like that, even with all of our precautions. We lasted six days, but knew we couldn't watch the dog for the last two that Ally was gone. We had to offer Wa'a some reprieve and rest.
So we took Kehau to my sister in laws to spend the last little while, and you know what I did?
I cried.
Yup. Legit cried when we decided to take her back to Cami's. Kehau was the best dog. Super obedient, fun, patient, good with my kids and a great protector and companion, and she reminded me so much of my own dogs I grew up with. We ALL loved her in our own way. Ah, we loved it. But Wa'a's health came first, so off she went!
We love you Kehau!
We threw balls all day with Kehau
They loved playing in her dog kennel
Beginning of eye being swollen
Nightly walks! We loved these and it felt good to get outside.
She would always lay on Erwin's feet and be near him during down time.
You can't tell, but he is slowing swelling and breaking out in hives.
Even when crying and not doing well, he begged that Kehau would stay by him and play with him all day.
