An unnerving night...

I just got off the phone with Meags, and realized after I told her our newest crazy story that recently happened to us, that I hadn't blogged about it! I gotta remember this one...so read this entire post and then see pics below! :) :)

It started around 10:50 p.m. on Sunday night. I had been asleep for about an hour and Erwin was still awake watching a show. I stirred and Erwin came into the room asking me if I had heard the knock on our front door. I hadn't. He hurried and got dressed and told me to do the same. I was a bit nervous and quickly got dressed. He then came back into the room and told me he heard pounding again, but from the garage. I still hadn't heard it. We looked out all the windows and even opened the front door and saw nothing. It was starting to creep me out.

Then I heard it. A loud banging on the garage door. Now I was really starting to feel unsettled. What on earth was it? Was an animal stuck inside the garage? Or was someone outside? My heart started to race a little, because any loud and scary sound from the unknown at night....is just a bundle of nerves to be pounced on!

Erwin opened our front door, and proceeded out to the lawn with a a very bright flashlight. All of I sudden I heard him ask "Can I help you?" I heard a quiet response but wasn't sure what was going on.

Before I knew it, I saw a young woman with short dark hair start walking to my front door with Erwin. But she was shoe less AND topless. :/ It was so crazy bizarre, that I had no idea what was going on. Erwin stood on the porch with her and I stayed just inside the house holding the door open. After talking to her we realized the obvious: that she was insanely drunk and delirious. Luckily, she wasn't loud or obnoxious. She was actually quiet and calm. She claimed that she lived at our house. I kept asking her where she really lived and she insisted it was our home. I asked her the street name and address of her house, and when I let her know that she was no where near where she thought she was, she didn't believe me. She was so out of it and some of what she said made absolutely no sense.

I then asked where her clothes were and her shoes. She mumbled about them being on the street somewhere and then changed her story a few times. At this point Erwin and I started to hurry and get her some clothes to cover herself up (because a topless woman is just awkward for everyone) and a blanket to keep her warm. I did not want this strange woman in my house, ( I had to ask her to stop trying to come in) so Erwin grabbed a bottle of water and took her to our little side studio so she could sit down and get out of the cold.

Before he took her, I kept asking the girl if there was anyone we could call, but she didn't know their numbers. I offered a cab, but she didn't have money on her. So of course my first instincts were to call the cops, but I didn't want to scare her, so I asked if I could call some friends from the fire department to take her home. She said yes.

I hurried and Googled the police dispatch in my area and explained the semi scary and very strange situation. In less than 2 minutes, 4 cops showed up and an undercover cop car with a detective. It has always made me laugh when I would pass by an obviously small incident and a ton of cops were there. But this time, I didn't care and was SO grateful for all those who came to assist us.

Every single cop was kind, accommodating and very thorough. They took over the situation and interviewed her. They were able to find out she lived in the town over, and called her parents to come pick her up, and let us know that the crime she had committed was trespassing and indecent exposure.

A few cops went up and down the street to try and go find her things. They eventually figured out that she had come over from next door. (Not sure how they pieced that together) She had been with my neighbor drinking, and had wandered away from his home. They were able to retrieve all of her personal belongings, and help her get dressed in her own clothes.

She had started to cry when Erwin was first talking to her, and continued to do so throughout the entire night. I heard her mention how embarrassed she was, but she was still very drunk.

After an hour, her parents eventually showed up to take her home. Her mom seemed rough around the edges and not very nice. She breezed right past Erwin and me and didn't apologize or even say thank you for taking care of her daughter. It bothered me, but Erwin said it would be silly to expect that.

After all was said and done, Erwin and I felt a huge sense of relief, but also a bit rattled. What if that had been an mean and angry drunk MAN? Or someone high on drugs? Drugs make people act psychotic and kinda like they are on steroids. Erwin had gone outside to investigate unarmed. We let a stranger right up to our door where anyone could have entered with force and been where our sleeping babies were. I just felt bothered....grateful, but bothered. We realized that we were lucky that the situation was as tame as it was, although it was still bizarre and very nerve wrecking.

To be honest, Erwin and I are still on edge. Every time we hear a strange sound, our heart starts to race. Ally stopped by twice yesterday, and when she knocked on the door, Erwin freaked out. ( I did too) I don't like that.

We now know how to better protect ourselves if something like this should happen again and what to do, who to call and where to go. Next time I'm just calling the cops without investigating myself.

Crazy story right? I didn't like it one bit. (nor am I pleased with our neighbor and his present company he seems to keep) But we are blessed and grateful that were are safe and that the poor girl got home warm and safe herself.
